Acquired from a Sydney estate
This genre of hard-wearing carpets has gained significant designer and consumer interest over the past ten or more years. We acquired this piece in Sydney recently for its uncommon soft pastel colours and especially its fine artistry and hand etching of the classic Chinese design elements. The understated mauve and pale green combine to create a soothing sense of calm acting as a base for the fine embroidery, which please examine.
In truth the oft used title of this type of carpet is a misnomer – they are not, design wise, art deco. They only happened to be made in the 1930’s coincident to the Art Deco movement which stressed minimal and forceful angular images, like the architecture of the same name. True Art deco carpets are very rare and costly and the majority would fit only in a very spare /severe “pure “Art Deco design scheme.
However, this carpet made a superior impact within one of the 80 or so prime art deco homes in the Sydney lower North Shore area. The owner had offset it with a custom made Deco style pale green and pink marble fireplace surround – to stunning effect.
The colors relate to true art deco design better than the majority of this style and size of Chinese carpets produced in the 1930’s. The majority of such pieces –and a number of them are well made and beautiful-- nonetheless suffer from too powerful a use of strong blues and reds. Subtlety such as displayed here is in our view a design virtue. This piece was acquired well and we are able to make it available at below market price.
