Amalysk, Yomud 1890

Amalysk, Yomud, BRIDAL GLORY TRIBAL ARTEFACT 1890

4 ft. 3 inches x 2 ft 3 inches at peak not incl. tassels

From a German Collector

An amalysk is a bridal bag and deeply personal ornament within Turkmen culture, used in the wedding celebration in which the bride rides on a camel with the bag on display.

This is a particularly fine specimen, of superior wool with natural dyes, a tribal artefact no longer produced, a part of a vanishing way of life, sadly.

There was at the time and much later no market for such items (until the 1970’s) in the West, and clearly it would have been in possession of the owners and her descendants for many decades, perhaps a century .

It is exquisitely woven – please note the fine waving linear detail at the top edge of the amalysk. This would make a striking wall hanging as visually exciting -or more- than most paintings or posters, and is surely an investment collectible, with ever growing interest in Turkmen rugs and accessories , particularly the latter which have gained proportionately in value to a greater extent in the last decade than most rugs and carpets .
