Vintage Isfahan

Vintage Isfahan, STRIKING PERFECTION circa 1950

10 feet 8 inches x 7 feet 2 inches

From an Australian estate

Our wide stock is predominately antique (1910 and before). In recent years we have selectively acquired vintage carpets (1910- 1960) only if they stand as fine art examples of special creativity or are representative pieces of high integrity, such as this Isphahan. Its very fine weave, thus high durability andis fully in the tradition of the superlative city and court carpets produced in this former capital, the largest city in the world in the 10th century and then a leading centre of art, science and scholarship.

It is still regarded widely as the most refined and beautiful city in Persia, with its exceptionally rich history and inspiring architecture. Isphahan was also one of the earliest centers in producing the finest city and court carpets.

The design of traditional Isphahan palmettes, curling leaves with a wide colour palette follows the court carpet tradition of “perfect symmetry “. This carpet exemplifies this tradition.

As standards of both weaving and dye techniques, and in particular the design/drawing of carpets generally declined across the 20th century, it is increasingly difficult to identify pieces of this calibre.

The dyes used in this carpet are very good and suggest strongly that they are a mixture (not unknown in some sophisticated locales) of both vegetable dyes and some quality synthetic dyes. In any case the reds and blues in particular have the desired mellowness of a “maturing “carpet, sought after by collectors of antique carpets.

This carpet is in excellent condition, very strong foundation, fine weave, high “density” and weight, and will easily provide many , many decades of heavy wear.

Above all this is a regal and impressive example of a respected tradition. In its former home it made a powerful statement in a large entry hall in which an exquisite 19th century French opaque Globe light hung above it.

We note that a slightly larger “cousin” piece -very similar in design- and condition was recently offered for sale on 5th Ave. NY for $60,000.

We have acquired the carpet well, as a part of a larger purchase and this is reflected in the price – a carpet of distinctive elegance able to provide at least two generations of pleasure.
